A Halifax Childhood - Mary Schroeder

Mary Schroeder was a remarkable woman. She was born in 1903 and her childhood was spent growing up in Halifax. Her father served as Tutor in Philosophy at the Unitarian College in Manchester. Mary herself took a teacher’s certificate at Leeds University and then spent some months in Bordeaux as an English tutor.

Her first teaching post was at Badminton School for Girls and while she was teaching there she won a Scholarship to the Columbia University School of Journalism in New York City.

On her return to England she became a reporter on the Leeds Mercury and Yorkshire Post and contributed articles to the Cambridge Evening News.

The manuscript for this book was found in her room when she died in 2002. It is dedicated to her family and it builds up a vivid series of pictures of the Halifax she so loved. It is a warm-hearted account of her life as a child before the First World War.

Mary had a unflagging delight in living and in meeting people, which lasted all her life. Her kindness and intelligence shine through this delightful memoir.
