The story of Edward Seago is compelling - his zest for life, his courage and his dedication to his art was phenomenal. He painted many of the greats of his day including, Markova, Noel Coward and Alexander of Tunis. On the outbreak of war he enlisted and became a camouflage officer and a friend and painting companion of his CO’s, Generals Auchinleck and Alexander. When Alexander was appointed Allied Commander in Chief in Italy he smuggled Seago out of England in extraordinary circumstances to be with him in the final stages of the campaign.
He was a confidant of the Royal Family and Prince Philip invited him to join the royal yacht, Britannia, for the Antarctic leg of its world tour. Prince Philip thought that such a journey would give a painter of Seago’s talent an opportunity to work where no other artist had really tried to paint.
John Seago followed a different path. He wanted to work with animals but he realised his family did not consider this to be of much importance. Perhaps overshadowed by his brother’s preferential treatment he spent most of his life in Africa where he organised the humane catching and shipping of wildlife from Nigeria, Rwanda and Kenya. Working alongside the natives he learnt to understand animals and learnt about native customs, religion, philosophy and witchcraft. His work in Africa laid the foundation for a much better understanding of the treatment of captive wild animals.
